Our History

Our history begins back in 2015, where Swedish Sofie and Sabina met their soulmate Marietta, from Guatemala. In this amazing and colourful country we started a beautiful adventure together, developing projects that promote more sustainable and regenerative life-styles, based on empathy and equality.

Sofie and Sabina’s first projects involved building bottle schools – ecological schools made out of recycled plastic bottles and plastic trash – for indigenous girls living in vulnerable conditions in Guatemala. The idea was to give girls, who are not prioritized for education in Guatemala, an opportunity to go to school while taking climate action, as trash in nature is a huge issue in Guatemala and there are no good alternatives for waste management.

Meanwhile, Marietta was working in Tecpán, Guatemala, developing a project focused on the conservation of natural resources and education. She developed a program based on a Culture of Peace, to create change in Guatemalan society through Creative Education, nurturing inner peace to create external change in society. She believes that through inner change we can not only improve our life quality, but also develop awareness and environmental consciousness.

After four years, three schools and many community workshops later, we decided to merge our organizations and become one unit, now known as ECOespiral. Our projects invite you to share, teach, learn and co-create a better world together, along with guatemalan communities and world-wide volunteers. Through Education Workshops, Water Conservation Programs and Self-Development activities, we are building skills, along with the guatemalan communities, to create a more sustainable society, both economically, environmentally and socially.
